TORAJA



Tanatoraja is one the beautiful regions in South Sulawesi, in Indonesia as well. From a distance, ones can see the jagged ridges of the hills stretching side along the slopes of the mountains. More than this, ones can also find beautiful valleys in which bamboos and sugar palms grow up, and the traditional houses with curved roof among the paddy fields that are beautifully and naturally carved and colored by the skilful people of Tanatoraja.

Before the Dutch come to power in this high land in the 20th century, there was no even a single wood given for the name for their religion instead of the word 'aluk' which refers to ritual ways and daily lives activities that are to be controlled, whitout special instruction of how to build a house, to cook rice , to greet boys and the head of the village, and the number of bufalloes and pigs that must be slaughtered in every ritual ceremony.

One of the principles of this teaching is to apply "give and take" tradition among them. Blesses and curses used to come betwewn the one who is still a lifeand the spirits of his or her ancestry. The most prestigious ceremony in Tana Toraja is death ceremonial.

More than half of the people of Tana Toraja are Christians. They still up hold and proud of their cultural heritage in welcoming the guest ritually.

Makale is the capital Tana Toraja regency. Most of the steeps hills are crowned with the church towers. while the valleys are dominated by the new government offices. Most of the offices take the form of the Torajan's traditional houses with the specific curved roofs and carvings. Tondon, Suaya and Sangalla are the places which directly connected with the West Toraja.During the market days, these towns seems to be the center of the activities because people from a distance come with their home industry products such as mats, baskets, carvings and cattle.

Among the towns in Tanatoraja regency.Rantepao is the second largest town after Makale.As the locations of most of the interesting places are within 15 km away from this town, then, this makes a lot of profit for Rantepao.

1. Sangalla

Sangalla is a village which is located on a hilly valley.It lies among the leafy bamboo trees.Here you can find an interesting object of tourism, that is a special cemetery for young babies.More than that, the cemetery of King Sangalla can be found at one of the slopes of the hills in this village which is named Suaya

2. Lemo

In Lemo graveyards you can see the veranda of "tau-tau" mixed up together with the steep coral stone museum in the open which seems to be a combination between death, arts, and ritual."Tau-tau" is a small wooden statue which sometimes is made of bamboo tree.This statue is considered to accomodate the spirits of the past by person.

3. Londa

Londa is a steep rocky sides graves.One of its sides is located on a higher place from the hills which has a deep caves where you can see coffins that are arranged and grouped based on the family lines.On the other side of the hill,on the balcony,dozens of "tau-tau" seems to be a life, stand straight with eyes opened, are looking over the beautiful landscape of this area.

4. Kete Kesu

Kete Kesu is a village which is still characterized by the traditional lives of Toraja people.If you take a look from the front side, you will find it lies over in the middle of the wide paddy fields with a beautiful sequences of curved roofs and carved walls barns.This village consists of four traditional tongkonan houses of Toraja.Inside one of the tongkonans, there is something like a small museum which is located in the middle of the ground floor.Most of the people of this village have a good mastery in carving and painting.This can be seen among them who are doing carves and paint.The carved bamboos and woods are marketed in various villages around this village.

5. To'Barana Sa'dang

There is an idea says that To'Barana Sa'dang is the center of Toraja regency.In other parts of this village you can find four barns which are well kept with grass grows tidily around the yards.The most attractive weavings of Toraja are displayed and sold in this village. The terraced paddy fields around the village is an interesting scenery.

6. Pallawa

By tracing to the north along the Sungai Sa'dang, you will come to an area which is named Pallawa.In this place 'tau-tau' and 'tongkonan house' seem to welcome the tourist who come to this place.Tongkonan Pallawa is one of the interesting Tongkonans which is located among the leafy bamboo trees on top of a hill.It is decorated with a number of buffalo's horns attached to the front of their traditional house.

7. Buntao

Buntao is an interesting to visit especially during the market days.Bontaou has 'patane' that is grave looks like a Toraja House.There are many old graves on top of the hill around this village.

8. Marante

Marante is a village which has a lot of tongkonans,big paddy barns and big rocky hills that containing hanging sone graves which the local people called 'Erong'.

9. Batutumonga

Batutumonga which has a cold climate is located in Sesean area.It has an altitude of about 1300 meters.In this area you can find about 56 'menhir' stones inone circle with 5 trees in the middle.Most of the 'menhir'stones are 2-3 meter height.The most beautiful view of Rantepao and its surrounding villeys can be seen from this spot.The beauty of the landscape, makes this area very interesting to visit.

10. Lokomata

Lokomata is located about 35 kms from Rantepao.It really presents a very interesting landscape which can be seen from the four-story big stones beside the road.This place has about 60 rocky slope graves which is beautified by the existence of terraced paddy fields, mountains and valleys in the lower part of the land.

11. Makula

There is a hot spring water resource in this place.Besides this, you can also find a house which is very good for taking a rest.It is completed with bath tubs and flowing fresh water in it.After having a long trip, you can also have a soak in a small structured-made pool in front of the house which is filled with hot spring water flowing from the back of the house.

12. Bori
This location is 6 kms away from Rantepao to Sa'dang and Pallawa.The interesting objects of tourism that can be found in this place are the existence of the tall "rante" and their menhir stones where a number of them soared toward the sky for several meters.
13. Penanian

Traditional tongkonan houses with carved walls and poles can also be seen here. Most of the paddy barns in this village is new with a new illustration on the carving.

14. Karassik

Karassik consists of bamboo houses which are painted colorfully. These houses stand side by close to the place doing ritual coremonies. You can also see a ritual ceremony "rante" and some menhir stones.
